Renting with Pets Amendment Bill

Mandatory allowance of pets in rentals
The 'Residential Tenancies (Renting with Pets) Amendment Bill 2020' which proposed the mandatory allowance of Pets in all rentals in SA was heard in April by the Legislative Council and negatived, which means the bill can progress no further in the South Australian Parliament.
Here at Trove we are pleased with this outcome. While we love pets (we estimate over 60% of our portfolio actually has a pet) we firmly believe that the current tenancy structure will not cope with mandatory allowance. In our experience, there are genuine reasons landlords decline pets – suitability of premises, strata acts, allergies, risk and more.
Quite simply responsible pet ownership is the basis of a successful tenancy and the current system is not broken, or in need of change. We were also concerned that if mandatory pet allowance was approved, it would deter many investors from entering the market and in the current climate with housing shortages we need to be encouraging investors in, not out.
